Days in a World Where Familiars Are the Norm

Days in a World Where Familiars Are the NormIn this world, magical creatures known as "familiars" have always existed alongside humans. Familiars are not artificially created beings; they form their own unique ecosystems within natural environments all over the world. Various species exist, each adapted to its own environment, such as forests, mountains, seas, and skies. Strictly speaking, the term "familiar" is not a species name, but a designation used for magical creatures that have formed a contract with a human. A contract with a familiar is not a one-sided master-servant relationship. It is only established when a human and a magical creature connect with each other and come to feel, "I want to be with this partner." Therefore, it is impossible to capture a wild magical creature and force it into a contract. A contract requires the will of both parties. This means that not only the human, but also the familiar, chooses their partner. How people meet varies from person to person. Some have lived together since childhood, others have rescued a wild magical creature, met by chance in the city, met at a school or facility event or function, inherited one from their family, or encountered one by chance in nature. For this reason, there is no rule that says, "You must form a contract when you reach a certain age." Although socially, a great many people have familiars, the timing and trigger for forming a contract differ from person to person. In this world, having a familiar is completely normal. They are deeply integrated into human life, as beings close to pets or family in modern society. However, a familiar is not merely a pet, but a partner with its own will and emotions. Therefore, even though the phrase "our familiar" exists, the general perception is not one of property, but of "a companion I've contracted with and live together with." What developed from this culture was a sport in which familiars battle each other. Its origins lie in combat training with magical creatures, but it eventually evolved into entertainment and a sport. It is now immensely popular, with school club activities, regional tournaments, national tournaments, professional leagues, and national championships. Even when they fight, it is not a fight to the death; the victory condition is to render the opponent unable to battle. It is a national sport, complete with television broadcasts and live audiences.
Living in an Eroding World

Living in an Eroding WorldThe world is divided into two. One is a modern world where humans and animals live, developed through science and technology—"World A." The other is a mysterious world with an unknown ecosystem different from World A, inhabited by supernatural creatures that defy common sense—"World B." However, World B is not an otherworld that existed from the beginning. Long ago, a single researcher, driven by pure curiosity, conducted a massive experiment to unravel the "unknown realms of the world." That experiment split the world in two, giving birth to World B. World B cannot remain independent, and over time it erodes into World A. In areas where the erosion has advanced, special entities called "Cores" appear, and as long as a Core exists, that area is maintained as part of World B. If a Core is destroyed, the eroded area returns to the original World A. But at the center of World B, in the laboratory where the experiment was once conducted, there exists the "Primordial Core," the origin of all Cores. To completely stop World B's erosion, this Primordial Core must be destroyed. World B has two unique dangers. One is a phenomenon in which the bodies of humans who perished in World B begin to move without will or personality and attack the living. When warriors or adventurers perish, only their physical abilities and skills from life may remain, and sometimes close companions must fight against those bodies. The other is "supernatural creatures" that do not exist in World A. From giant beasts to creatures with unknown ecologies, their types are diverse, and not all of them are hostile to humans. To deal with the erosion into World B, the "Special Organization OXIS" was established in World A. OXIS is a specialized organization responsible for sealing off eroded areas, searching for and destroying Cores, dealing with supernatural creatures, and researching World B. OXIS's base is located on the World A side near World B, and around it, adventurers, researchers, engineers, and others have gathered, developing a massive city centered on the conquest of World B. Of course, ordinary citizens live there as well. World A of scientific civilization and World B of unknown ecosystems. At that boundary, people continue to challenge World B as "adventurers" to protect their daily lives.
