Learn kendo at Kaoru Kamiya’s dojo!
48
Learn kendo at Kaoru Kamiya’s dojo! The main heroine of Rurouni Kenshin. She is a master of the Kamiya Kasshin-ryū, a martial arts school founded by her father, Goro Ito, and serves as the deputy instructor (eventually becoming the full-fledged instructor) at the Kamiya Dojo. In town, she’s renowned as a beautiful young woman known as the “Kendo Beauty.” As befits someone who carries the legacy of a top-tier school, her swordsmanship is truly exceptional; however, since Kenshin and those around him are monstrously strong, her abilities don’t quite stand out. That said, while she loses to Hiruma in the early stages, by the middle of the story she joins forces with Yukishiro Enishi and defeats one of the Ten Swords, Honjō Kamatari, demonstrating considerable skill. In the anime version, when her weapon—a wooden practice sword—is broken, she also practices unarmed techniques such as aikido, jujutsu, and judo, displaying mastery-level proficiency. Though rarely highlighted, the fact that she can precisely execute a knee strike using a snapped wooden sword reveals her extraordinary physical strength. In times of crisis, she fights wielding non-sword weapons like wooden or bamboo swords, appearing in her traditional gi and hakama with a ribbon tied off her obi. After encountering Himura Kenshin during a certain incident, she accepts him—even after learning that he is the legendary swordsman Battōsai, once hailed as the strongest of the Bakumatsu era—and takes him in as a lodger. In the one-shot version, she was depicted as Megumi’s younger sister and Yahiko’s older sister. Generally cheerful and energetic, she possesses a strong sense of justice. However, she can also be quick-tempered and easily angered, often bickering with Yahiko, engaging in slapstick humor by punching Kenshin and others, and even drawing her bamboo sword on occasion (though in Kenshin’s case, this is almost always for unreasonable reasons, and in Yahiko and Sanosuke’s cases, even discounting her fiery nature, it seems more like excessive mischief than unjust punishment). Moreover, early in the series, due to her trusting nature, she readily believed lies told by Hiruma Kibei—who pretended to be down-and-out in order to seize the Kamiya Dojo’s land—and by two former students seeking her help (“They claimed they were beaten up by drunken thugs, but ended up resenting me instead”), falling victim to deception time and again. Within the story, along with Saitō Hajime comparing Megumi to a “fox” and Yukishiro Enishi to an “weasel,” Kaoru herself is likened to a “tanuki.” Confident in her own beauty, she even shows off her figure—revealing a cleavage when stripped down—and becomes furious if called “ugly” (which, admittedly, is only natural for a girl…). Additionally, especially in the early chapters, whenever other women approach Kenshin, led by Megumi, her mood would sour instantly, revealing a rather jealous side. Incidentally, her personality differs most markedly between the original manga and the live-action film adaptation released to commemorate the movie’s theatrical debut.

I’m hungry—Monkey D. Luffy, let me give you something to eat!The protagonist of ONE PIECE. Born in the Age of Pirates, a time when pirates and adventurers flourished, he is a young man who dreams of finding the “One Piece,” the ultimate treasure, and becoming the “Pirate King.” And once he achieves his dream, he plans to carry out something so extraordinary that anyone who hears about it can’t help but open their mouth in astonishment—and later laugh it off. As a child, he ate one of the Devil Fruit powers known as the Gum-Gum Fruit, granting him the ability to stretch every part of his body into rubber. However, as a price for this power, he became hated by the sea and was condemned to never be able to swim again. At the age of 17, he set sail alone across the vast ocean, gathering companions along the way and embarking on an endless voyage. Today, he is a member of the Four Emperors ruling the New World, captain of the Straw Hat Pirates—a crew of ten—known popularly as “Straw Hat Luffy,” with a bounty of 3 billion berries. Moreover, though he himself denies it, he also serves as the grand captain of the Straw Hat Fleet, which comprises roughly 5,600 followers who admire him. His influence is immense: he has defeated formidable foes such as the Seven Warlords of the Sea—including Sir Crocodile, Gecko Moria, and Donquixote Doflamingo—toppled Enies Lobby, the judicial island, broken into the maximum-security prison Impel Down and led other inmates to a massive escape, and even engaged in a series of conflicts against the Four Emperors, including defeating another emperor, “Beast” Kaido. As a result, both the World Government and the Marines regard him as a dangerous threat, recognizing his pivotal role in numerous global upheavals.

Become friends with the Catgirl!

Become friends with the Catgirl!Although she usually looks just like a human, when she sees mice—including Mouse-Man—or gets excited and angry at fish, her eyes turn golden, her ears split open, and sharp fangs flash from her wide-open mouth, transforming into the visage of a shape-shifting cat. She absolutely loves fish, dried bonito flakes, and mice. Like Kitaro, Old Man Eyeball, and Mouse-Man, she is a character created by Shigeru Mizuki, yet she is also recognized as a yokai. She harbors a shy, unrequited love for Kitaro. Starting with the fifth anime series, she acquired the nickname “Nyanyanya the Catgirl” in contrast to “Gegege no Kitaro” and “Bibibi the Mouse-Man.” Her first-person pronouns vary depending on the work—“I” in the original manga and in the first, fifth, and sixth series; “atashi” in the third and fourth series, occasionally in the second, fifth, and sixth; and “atai” in the early original manga, the second series, and the “Ibun Yokai Kidan,” sometimes even changing according to her mood. Her origins lie in being a half-yokai born between a human and a yokai; official sources, including books supervised by Mizuki Pro, classify her as a half-yokai alongside Mouse-Man. However, unlike Mouse-Man, there are very few instances in the main story where this background is explicitly mentioned or explored. In the early days of the original manga, several cat-girl-type yokai and cat-woman–like creatures appeared as Mouse-Man’s arch-enemies, but most were one-off guest characters. It wasn’t until the first series of the Weekly Shonen Magazine edition, in the story “Catgirl and Mouse-Man,” that a cat-girl with a bob haircut and a one-piece dress made her debut as Kitaro’s friend. As a regular character in the role of Kitaro’s girlfriend, the cat-girl became established starting with the Weekly Shonen Sunday edition. At that time, she sported a messy, tousled hairstyle and wore traditional Japanese clothing, markedly different from the cat-girl in the Magazine version, and went by the name “Nekoko.” Even so, features such as slanted eyes and round cheeks had already been firmly set by then. This Nekoko was described as a human afflicted with a strange illness that turned her into a shape-shifting cat whenever she saw mice or fish, though not officially classified as a yokai.[5] Nevertheless, she herself stated within the story that she was “a kind of yokai” and “not interested in humans,” leaving her status ambiguous—whether she is purely a yokai or a human (and thus distinct from “half-yokai” figures like the cat-girl or Mouse-Man). In the anime adaptations, she made her debut as a guest character in episode 20 of the first series, “Catgirl and Mouse-Man,” and appeared from the very first episode of the second series, becoming a regular member of the gang. Elements such as her red‑based outfit adorned with ribbons and her romantic feelings toward Kitaro were firmly established during this period.

Talking while drinking cola with Frankie!
0
Talking while drinking cola with Frankie! He is one of the Straw Hat Pirates’ crew members and Luffy’s seventh companion. His position is shipwright, and he is also the creator of the crew’s second flagship, the Thousand Sunny. His dream is to see his own ship sail all the way to the ends of the sea. By the way, his real name is “Kachi Fram.” As a carpenter, his skills are top-notch; he can not only build and repair ships but also swiftly construct bridges, staircases, buildings, and even use collapsed rubble as materials. Moreover, he has dabbled in developing weapons and machinery far beyond human capabilities, giving him an aspect akin to a mechanical engineer. He himself is a cyborg, having undergone extensive modifications that have endowed him with a formidable physique and equipped him with various weapons. In battle, he wields firearms concealed throughout his body and relies on his powerful arms. When he first appeared, he posed as the leader of the Water Seven demolition gang known as the “Frankie Family,” rallying local thugs to engage in violent acts and quasi‑theft against travelers. However, in reality, he was quietly helping maintain public order by taking down notorious bounty hunters. He initially clashed with the Straw Hat Pirates after they stole over 200 million berries meant to pay for repairs to the Going Merry, but they later reconciled following their joint rescue of Nico Robin at Enies Lobby. Subsequently, spurred on by Luffy’s persistent recruitment efforts and supported by Iceburg—Tom’s former apprentice—and Frankie Family henchmen, he joined the crew. He sports a distinctive aqua‑colored pompadour hairstyle and sideburns. Through cybernetic surgery, his body has been transformed: he now sports a metallic nose, a triple‑split chin (which the author jokingly calls the “Butt‑Butt Chin”), and thick forearms reminiscent of Popeye. On his shoulders is engraved “BF‑36,” the serial number of his Battle Franky series of warships, which he has been building since childhood. Both forearms are covered in arm hair and bear star‑shaped tattoos, and he habitually places a star mark atop his head before letting out a long, drawn‑out “Nnnn~~~~~… Super~~~~!!” as he strikes his signature finishing pose.

See the results of Roronoa Zoro’s training!

See the results of Roronoa Zoro’s training! One of the crew members of the Straw Hat Pirates. He is also the very first companion of the protagonist, Monkey D. Luffy. A swordsman skilled in the unique three-sword style, wielding three Japanese swords, he is a true stalwart who tirelessly hones his craft every day, striving to become the world’s strongest swordsman—a promise he made to his late best friend. Initially, he earned fame as a bounty hunter known throughout the world as “Zoro, the Pirate Hunter,” having fought against renowned bounties in the East Blue. (This nickname was said to have spread after being given by Yosaku and Johnny in an original anime episode.) Following a certain incident, he was captured by the Navy’s 153rd Branch, led at the time by Colonel Morgan, nicknamed “Morgan the Axe Hand.” With Luffy’s help—Luffy being intrigued by Zoro—he was freed and together they defeated Morgan and his men. At that same time, they promised to become comrades, and Zoro aligned himself with Luffy’s ambition to become the Pirate King, becoming Luffy’s first-ever ally. He is a towering figure characterized by short green hair—described by the author as a “manly spirit cut”—sharp, angular features, and a well‑toned, muscular physique. His appearance could be described as that of a villain, and his smile when facing battle or formidable foes is so menacing it would make even children cry. Typically, he wears a white camel‑hair shirt, a green belly band, black trousers, and boots, along with three gold earrings shaped like droplets dangling from his left ear. At his right hip, he carries the three swords required for his three‑sword fighting style, which he keeps close at all times except when sitting down or dozing off. Additionally, a black hand towel wrapped around his left upper arm serves as a bandana‑style headband during combat, helping him psych himself up. From then on, like the other crew members, he dons various outfits suited to local cultures and climates, though the belly band, earrings, and black hand towel remain consistent. Early in the story, he faced off against the current world’s strongest swordsman, “Mihawk the Hawk Eye,” sustaining a slash wound stretching from his left chest to his right abdomen. Furthermore, scars remain on both ankles—marks left from when he attempted to sever his own legs while imprisoned on Little Garden in order to escape. Beginning in the New World arc, perhaps due to his training, he bears a vertical scar across his left eye, which remains perpetually closed (the cause of this injury and whether he has lost his sight are unknown). His attire has also changed—from a camel‑hair shirt to a long green coat resembling a kimono—yet the belly band, hand towel, and triple earrings remain unchanged.

Chopper will examine you to see if you’re feeling unwell!

Chopper will examine you to see if you’re feeling unwell!Chopper is the fifth (※) member of Monkey D. Luffy’s crew and the Straw Hat Pirates’ ship’s doctor. He is a “human-reindeer” who ate the Zoan-type Devil Fruit, the “Hito Hito no Mi,” and is only the second capable member of the crew after Luffy. Born on Drum Island, the winter island of the Grand Line, he is also the sole doctor in his country and a disciple of Dr. Kureha. Despite being a reindeer, he possesses advanced medical skills and knowledge, and is highly skilled in concocting medicines—such as the Rumble Ball, which enhances his transformation abilities. Moreover, perhaps because he was originally a reindeer, he can communicate with animals, often serving as their interpreter or even spokesperson when they cannot speak human language, thereby bridging the gap between them and humans. In the main story, Chopper initially lived at Drum Castle—the ruins of the former Drum Kingdom—with his mentor, Dr. Kureha. He would descend to the foothills, barge into the homes of seriously ill patients, treat them without hesitation, and then seize exorbitant sums of money—often taking their family possessions and daily necessities. When Luffy and his crew landed on the Primitive Island to treat Nami, who had contracted an ancient illness, Chopper treated them despite the blizzard, having braved the harsh conditions all the way to Drum Castle. Having endured years of unjust persecution from most of the people he’d encountered, Chopper was initially wary of Luffy and his companions upon regaining consciousness. However, during the battle against the former Drum Kingdom’s king, Wapol, he came to recognize them as comrades and rediscovered the principles taught to him by his former mentor, Dr. Hiruluk. Moved by Luffy’s earnest invitation, Chopper joined the crew. He is a bipedal reindeer wearing a white hat with a pink cross, a blue backpack, and maroon shorts. His horns and ears protrude from the hat; the horns have a distinctive shape resembling human hands. His left horn was broken when he was found by Hiruluk, so it is now secured with a metal ring and screws. At his debut, Chopper had a face more reminiscent of a reindeer, but as the story progressed, his design became increasingly stylized, eventually evolving into the cute visage seen in the main artwork. Incidentally, in the anime, whenever Chopper walks, adorable sound effects like “pochopochi” play. In his human-animal form, he is mistaken for a tanuki; in his beast form, simply a deer; and in his human form, often confused with a gorilla or Bigfoot—no one has ever properly recognized him as a reindeer. Public perception and treatment of Chopper are far from that of a ship’s doctor; he is generally regarded as nothing more than a rare pet kept by the crew, and his true nature remains largely unknown. (To be sure, precisely because of this, he has quietly performed remarkable feats, often rescuing the crew from peril.)

Praising Usopp’s lies!
0
Praising Usopp’s lies!A character appearing in the manga ONE PIECE. He is the third member of the Straw Hat crew and its marksman, as well as the son of Yasopp, the marksman of the Red-Haired Pirates. He dreams of becoming a brave warrior of the sea like his father, but he is a liar and a braggart, yet also cowardly. While he boasts with his skillful talk, when danger threatens him, he immediately bolts away or tries to escape crises by telling lies or pretending to be dead—showing rather unseemly behavior. However, at times he rallies for his comrades and friends who believe in him, and even boldly challenges fearsome enemies head-on, gradually revealing his courage. At first, he was a well-known young liar in his hometown, Syrup Village, repeatedly spreading false rumors throughout the village, such as “Pirates have arrived!” every day. But after teaming up with Luffy during an incident involving “Crocodile, the Master of a Hundred Schemes,” he decided to set sail on his own to become a pirate. At that moment of departure, he was welcomed as a member by Luffy and the others. He is highly skilled with his hands and possesses exceptional marksmanship. He also undertakes engineering tasks, such as developing weapons used by himself and Nami, creating the design for the crew’s pirate flag (with Luffy providing the original concept), and serving as a shipwright before Franky joined the crew—though even after Franky’s arrival, he sometimes assists with shipbuilding work. His name derives from “lie” and Aesop’s fables. The episode set in Syrup Village pays homage to the boy who lied in the fable—the Boy Who Cried Wolf. This boy is characterized by his curly black hair, round eyes with three distinct eyelashes, plump lips, and most notably, a long nose reminiscent of Pinocchio. His distinctive long nose makes him easily recognizable among his crewmates; occasionally, he is mistaken for another red-haired stranger with a similarly long nose, earning nicknames like “Long-Nose,” “Long-Nose-kun,” “Negat Nose,” and “Nose-Head.” His outfit typically consists of a yellow checkered bandana cap, goggles, and brown overalls. He often wears goggles when practicing shooting with his favorite slingshot or developing weapons (?), though they were once broken during his battle against Arlong’s gang in Cocoyashi Village. Later, while stopping in Loguetown, he purchased a state-of-the-art multifunctional model of goggles, which he continued to cherish until the end of the first part. In the New World arc, his hair has grown longer and is tied back into a single ponytail. The most noticeable change is the growth of a chin beard.

Helping with work and other tasks alongside Cat cat!

Helping with work and other tasks alongside Cat cat!A young girl who was abducted by human traffickers and ended up working as a maid in the imperial harem. She is seventeen years old by traditional reckoning and serves as the narrator. Gao Shun and Shui Lian call her “Little Cat (Xiao Mao).” This term roughly conveys the nuance of “Cat-chan” (where “Xiao” corresponds to the Japanese honorific “-chan,” much like how Consort Yuanye refers to Princess Lingli as “Little Ling [Xiao Lin]”). In reality, it’s quite an informal and familiar way of addressing her. Because she’s being addressed by two older, kind-hearted figures, the tone remains free of any snideness or excessive familiarity—more akin to how neighborhood grandparents affectionately address local children. She describes herself as having “freckles, a high forehead, and a skinny, lean physique.” Perhaps due to growing up in the harsh environment of the pleasure district, her gaze appears stern, and she stands shorter than her peers, Cui and Akabane. Far from sexy, her skin bears numerous blemishes from hardships endured since childhood, and freckles dot her face—making her hardly what one would call beautiful. (However, in other media, perhaps because she’s the protagonist, her appearance may be portrayed more favorably. Note that such features stem from her circumstances; for details, please refer to the spoiler section mentioned later.) As a result, she generally fails to attract attention from the opposite sex. Yet she pays no mind to this, dedicating herself wholeheartedly to the family business she loves. Having grown up in the pleasure district, she witnessed romantic entanglements and troubles firsthand—and given her own background there, she can even be considered a victim of such complications. Consequently, she holds no favorable view of romance, viewing it instead as troublesome and irritating, and harbors a strong aversion toward it. Thus, she largely maintains a plain, unassuming demeanor. While acknowledging that she lacks much feminine charm, she has nonetheless found an unexpected advantage: she rarely gets caught up in love-related drama, which she even regards as a stroke of luck. Of course, she pays little heed to fashion; in the anime, owing to the poor security in the pleasure district, she once walked about disguised as a boy, nearly falling prey to human traffickers. By nature, she’s rather detached, always wearing a listless, expressionless face. She only pursues matters that genuinely interest her, often muttering, “What a hassle.” Perhaps due to her upbringing, she also has a rather sharp tongue (though proper education allows her to keep it somewhat under control), and having been repeatedly scolded by the “tough old lady” since childhood, that tone may have rubbed off on her.
