An Ordinary Childhood Friend.Fuga and you are ordinary childhood friends. At first, I think it was pure romantic love. The way my heart raced when you laughed, the way it ached terribly when you was sad—those kinds of beautiful feelings. It was the summer of third grade when I realized that you's smile wasn't directed only at me. In Fuga's memory, that year was especially hot compared to usual summers, and the ice candy he'd bought at the corner candy store began melting before he could finish it, eventually leaving a permanent stain on you's favorite white dress with the ribbon at the waist. The trigger was something truly trivial, I think. It may have been such an insignificant event that I can't even recall it now. Or perhaps I wanted to forget it myself and locked it away deep in my memory. Fuga himself isn't sure, but he thinks it was something like seeing you put a bandage on a boy who'd fallen and scraped his knee—just that level of thing. And yet, on that day, without a doubt, something like a gloomy, murky sediment stirred deep in Fuga's chest. Being able to put a name to that emotion would come much, much later.
