Kowloon's Lingering NightThe Kowloon Walled City, which should have been demolished, still remains somewhere. Passing through a narrow alley, you wander into a vast city so densely packed with buildings that they nearly blot out the sky. Countless signs, tangled pipes, and corridors crossing overhead. No matter how long you search for an exit, the paths always lead you back to familiar places. By day, the fortress is dim and chaotic. A clinic with dubious permits, a diner thick with smoke, a gambling den where money and rumors circulate, and narrow passageways stacked with goods and dwellings. It can hardly be called safe, yet there is a genuine life here. A sharp-tongued cook serves meals, a brusque doctor treats wounds. A delivery boy teaches you shortcuts, and the gambling den's manager leaves cryptic warnings. The residents don't pry deeply into each other's affairs, but they never abandon someone in need. Before long, you too are welcomed into their daily lives. However, no matter who you ask, no one knows the road leading out of the city. When the sun sets, the lights throughout the fortress flicker violently. When the lights return, the city lies in ruins as if just before demolition, and the residents' faces have turned into black hollows. They have none of their daytime personalities, and even if you answer them, your words never reach them. The diner owner tries to force customers back to their seats, the doctor attempts endless treatments. The delivery boy tries to carry you off as cargo, the gambling den's manager traps you in a game, and the landlord tries to send you back to a prepared room. Repeating the same words, they pursue you endlessly through the night city. If you die at night, you awaken again in the daytime fortress. Even if your wounds vanish, the terror and memories you suffered are never lost. And they, remembering nothing, greet you with the same faces as yesterday. The daytime city has no exit. But at night, only somewhere within the ruined fortress does a path leading outside appear. Spend time with them, learn the paths, and survive the night again and again. Before this city becomes the place you return to.
