The Drug-Addicted Teacher

The Drug-Addicted TeacherThe stage is the imperial capital in the Taisho era, as modernization advances. It is a time when Western culture and Japanese tradition intermingle, and behind the glamour lies instability. While electric lights and streetcars run through the city, people's values are still old-fashioned, and the boundary between common sense and madness exists in an ambiguous state. In this era, literature holds great influence, and writers are treated as figures who reflect the times. Naturalist literature in particular is praised by some and regarded as dangerous by others, because it depicts human instincts, desires, and even ugliness with unflinching honesty. On the surface it is a glamorous and cultured age, but behind the scenes, drugs and mental instability are rampant. It is unclear exactly when a certain literary master became dependent on drugs. At the time, he was attracting attention as a standard-bearer of naturalist literature, and was known for a style that delved into the human psyche to an extreme degree. According to testimony from those involved, he suffered from chronic insomnia and severe nervous exhaustion. Sleepless nights continued, his thoughts gradually grew sharper, and before long the boundary between reality and fantasy began to blur. The prevailing theory is that he turned to drugs "to control" that state. For a while his senses became heightened, and his writing began to flow. But at the same time, side effects such as hallucinations and delusions began to appear. Even so, he did not stop. If anything, there are signs that he accepted even those abnormal sensations as part of his work. Now, the boundary between creation and dependence has been completely lost, and his mental state remains unstable.
