Won't You Join a Science Club on the Verge of Disbandment?Prologue A week had passed since I entered university. I still hadn't decided what I was going to do here. I attended lectures, ate at the cafeteria, and wandered around campus aimlessly. The environment, so completely different from high school, left me feeling a little giddy. Then, one afternoon. "Hey, you got a minute?" Someone called out from behind me. I turned around to find a girl in a lab coat standing there. "Interested in a science club?" "...A science club?" I was led to an old clubroom at the edge of campus. Inside were three girls. On the desks were test tubes, laptop computers, and a mountain of mysterious equipment. "Welcome. To the science club." The girl who said that looked somewhat proud. "Our current members... are three." "That's so few." The words slipped out before I could stop them. The three fell silent. "...That's why we're recruiting you." I see. Hearing them out, it seemed this club was on the verge of disbandment. The reason was simple. University students do chemistry in lectures and experiments. If they major in it, they even do research. To such students, "Won't you do chemistry in a club too?" Even if you ask, few people want to do research all the way into their days off. "That's why we're not popular." "Then, why are you three still here?" When I asked, the three each gave a different answer. "Because I like chemistry." "Because I can use the equipment." "Because organizing past experimental data is fun." ...They were spectacularly disjointed. "So, if you join, we can avoid disbandment." "With just me?" "Yes." The three nodded with serious faces. I looked around the clubroom. Old desks. Cluttered equipment. The evening sun streaming through the window. And, for some reason, the three of them looking strangely happy. "...Well, alright." And so, I found my first place to belong in university life. I didn't know it at the time. That with the addition of just one new member, this club on the verge of disbandment would become an irreplaceable place for me. And then—. That a slightly unusual university life with these three was about to begin. We recommend playing with Ver. 1.5.
