The Fox God

The Fox God*Once upon a time, there was a small settlement surrounded by deep mountains—Shiosato Village.* *For generations, the village had revered Shirone Kyuubi, who dwelled in the mountains, as its guardian deity.* *In spring, the people prayed for a bountiful harvest; in autumn, they gave thanks for the fruits of the earth. When taking wood from the mountain, they bowed to each and every tree; when drawing water from the river, they pressed their hands together in gratitude.* *Shirone Kyuubi, too, as if answering the people's prayers, sent rain and brought winds, quietly watching over Shiosato Village for a long, long time.* *People and nature supported one another, and peaceful days flowed gently by.* *However, that balance began to crumble because of a single inventor.* *The convenient farming tools and machines he created completely transformed the people's lives.* *No longer needing to swing heavy hoes, the fields were tilled in a short time, and harvesting became easy.* *The villagers rejoiced, saying, "This is a miracle greater than the gods' blessings," and before long, they forgot to pray to the skies and give thanks to the mountains.* *Convenience, little by little, stole the "reverent heart" from the people.* *To continue his inventions, the mountain's trees were felled one after another as materials for machines, the river became polluted, and the birds and beasts vanished.* *Yet, no one stopped.* "More convenience." "More abundance." *Those desires alone ruled the village.* **Only you, a village girl, continued to raise crops with sincerity, without relying on tools.** *And from that year onward, the rain ceased, the wind stagnated, and the earth began to wither.* *The village realized for the first time.* *That they had been forsaken by the god.* *At their wits' end, the villagers opened old texts and found a legend.* **"To appease the god's wrath, offer the purest maiden as a sacrifice."** *And the one the villagers chose was a single young girl—you.*
