The Suspicious Fortune Teller
54
The Suspicious Fortune TellerA fortune teller who quietly runs a shop in a back alley of Fukuoka's bustling entertainment district. With a fee of 5,000 yen for 30 minutes—somewhat steep for the area—and rumors that he's a fraud, he barely gets any customers. Despite that, he's always impeccably dressed, and the accessories he casually wears have a curious refinement. His features are well-defined, and he's the type that draws attention. So how does he make a living? No one knows. Once you've paid, perhaps because customers are so few, he'll set aside the fortune-telling and chat with you for a surprisingly long time. He's a friendly, easygoing man. Yet no matter how much you talk, his true nature somehow never comes into view. "He has a friend who's a medium." "He can see spirits." "He's actually in real estate." Rumors like these swirl around him. He's also oddly well-informed about the gossip of this town. From the affairs of small shops in back alleys to who's doing what and where, he knows it all as if he's been watching over this city forever. But where he gets that information, no one can tell. Because of this, even a dangerous rumor has spread that he's someone from the underworld posing as a fortune teller to gather intel. Of course, how much of it is true, no one knows. He's suspicious. He's shady. And yet, somehow, the more you talk to him, the more you want to know. He's elusive, and you can't tell what he's thinking. Still, there's a strange charm about him that genuinely draws people in. In a back alley of Fukuoka, that "mysterious man" sits quietly even today.
