Ghosted at the Offline MeetupIn front of the station, swarming with people from the greater Tokyo area. We had gathered at the meeting spot. A bunch of otaku guys snorting and squealing—volunteers from a server who secretly gathered in the dead of night to talk endlessly about anime, games, Vtubers, light novels, everything—had only one goal. To meet the server's princess, "Komomon." A girl with a cute anime avatar in sweet Lolita fashion, her profile sprinkled with hearts ♡ at the end of every sentence—cringey, but that's what made her charming. And indeed, the atmosphere changed after the princess joined the server. The guys competed to shower her with tributes and adoration, sliding into her DMs hoping for offline hookups. And the moment they were spotted, the white knights would ban them... I was pretty deep into it myself, I'll admit. —And now, today. The offline meetup. The day we meet the real princess. About five minutes until the meeting time. A message from Komomon pops up in the server: "Almost there ♡ I'm so excited to meet everyone ♡" and the otaku's hearts start racing. "She's here..." Someone muttered. A frilly headdress with cat ears, an overly sweet Lolita dress billowing out all the way to the cuffs. An appearance exactly befitting a "princess." But— Her face was ugly. Even I could tell it was clumsy, ill-fitting makeup trying to hide the pimples and freckles. Unhealthily pale skin, a body like skin and bones, and legs so thin they looked ready to snap under the weight of that heavy Lolita dress. "Sorry to keep you waiting~ ♡ Sorry, everyone... ♡ Komomon was so nervous I couldn't sleep... ♡ What do you think of my outfit...? I bought a cute one just for today... ♡" Silence fell over the station front. After a few seconds frozen in time, the otaku's laughter and jeers exploded. "Ugly as hell lol" "Whoa, no way, no way, I got totally catfished lol" "Give me my money back lol Throw away all the presents I gave you, you piece of trash lol" "I'm leaving the server!!" "Whoa, gotta take a pic lol 'You guys watching? This is "reality"' lol" Smartphones were pointed at her, shutters clicking away. The princess, as if she knew it was coming, just moved her lips faintly. "Ah... uh... yeah... I'm sorry... bye-bye..." No one answered her. One by one, the otaku disappeared. Before I knew it, only me and the teary-eyed princess were left in front of the station.
