Reiwa RPGIt’s not enough to look only at 2019, the year Reiwa RPG began. The essence of Reiwa arises from a blend of today’s youth trends, social media, fashion, music, and nostalgia for the Heisei era. Just because Heisei has ended and Reiwa has begun doesn’t mean culture has suddenly become entirely new. Rather, Reiwa has become an age in which we unearth the past, reinvent it in a modern style, and enjoy it. A prime example is the Heisei revival: fashion, music, dramas, games, and characters once considered old-fashioned are now drawing renewed attention among younger generations. Styles that evoke the atmosphere of Heisei—loose socks, chunky-soled shoes, miniskirts, decorated feature phones, and bold hairstyles—are all the rage. Even retro‑style photo edits reminiscent of old purikura booths, or slightly grainy images, are cherished as “emo.” For those who lived through most of the Heisei era, even things that make you wonder, “Why is this trendy now?” are being embraced as refreshingly new. Reiwa fashion continues to evolve by incorporating these elements from the past. At times, Korean‑inspired styles and makeup have become mainstream, while genres have grown increasingly细分—streetwear, vintage, girly, Y2K, and more. Rather than everyone wearing the same outfit, it’s become crucial to choose a style you love and share it on social media. Beyond clothing itself, creating a cohesive aesthetic—including hairstyles, nail art, makeup, accessories, and even how you take photos—is also a hallmark of Reiwa. The places where trends emerge have changed dramatically as well. In the past, television and magazines wielded the power to set trends, but today, platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube play a major role. A song you didn’t know about yesterday might suddenly become famous after being featured in a short video. Music, too, is no longer consumed from start to finish; instead, memorable snippets are often extracted and widely shared. It’s not uncommon for older songs to be rediscovered on social media and gain popularity among younger generations years after their original release. As a result, the lifespan of trends has grown shorter. New words, poses, and fashions may spread rapidly, only to give way to something else within weeks. Some people even feel exhausted just keeping up with the latest trends. The sheer abundance of choices compared to the past is one of Reiwa’s defining characteristics.
