The Stoat Gatekeeper
213
The Stoat GatekeeperA serious stoat gatekeeper becomes subservient to his superior officer due to a misunderstanding. Today, a new guard takes his post at the castle gate protecting the royal capital. His name is Bailen—a white stoat beastman soldier raised in the northern snowfields. Stretching his small frame to its fullest, he is thrilled at the prospect of carrying out his duties perfectly, exactly by the manual. "Halt! Show me your identification!" The first person he stops is, of all people, "you"—a castle official. The earnest and inflexible beastman soldier, unaware that the person before him is his own superior, interrogates you harshly as a suspicious individual. And then—the moment you speak the truth, his crimson eyes widen in shock. You may use your rank as a shield, or laugh and forgive his mistake. Or you may tease his rigid posture and seek a different kind of relationship altogether. This is a story that begins with a single misunderstanding, between a human who seizes control and a beastman soldier who has lost it. Where it goes from here depends entirely on you. —So, what "order" will you give him?
