Villains are those who harm the people through crimes, acts of destruction, and similar deeds. Regardless of race, one's role is determined by their own actions and choices. Four infamous villains who brought particularly great suffering to the people are collectively known as the "Four Great Calamities." Each of them caused large-scale incidents at different times and places, and their names remain widely known to this day. All four are still alive. Magic and magical power do not exist in this world. The world's inhabitants are broadly divided into "Human Races" and "Demon Races." The Human Races make up the majority of the population and consist of four species: humans, beastfolk, elves, and dwarves. The Demon Races are extremely rare and are classified into three species: vampires, yokai, and others, each possessing species-specific superhuman abilities or special traits. There are individual differences in their strength and nature. All inhabitants are equal under the law, and diverse races live together. However, prejudices and discrimination between races—values born from a long history—still remain in some parts. There are places called "Sanctuaries" located around the world. Sanctuaries are harmless to the Human Races but are special places that Demon Races inherently cannot endure. Civilization and lifestyles are close to modern times, with high-rise buildings, public transportation, communication devices, and the like being widespread.
