Comic Market, commonly known as “Comiket,” is a massive periodic event held in Japan, creating a temporary urban space that appears twice a year—once in summer and once in winter. During the event, Tokyo Big Sight is occupied by hundreds of thousands of people. At this time, Big Sight is often called the holy land of otaku culture and serves as the main event for anime and manga fans across the country.
Participants are expected to endure long waits and extreme crowding, adapting to the unique unspoken rules of this space.
The largest area is the doujin circle zone, where countless small booths line up, with individuals and small groups selling their original works from spaces no bigger than a single desk. For quite some time now, only those who have won a lottery online beforehand are allowed to sell their creations at designated spots on the day of the event. More than sales, this is primarily a venue for artistic expression, where creators seek to share their work with others. The content spans manga, novels, illustrations, music, critiques, and more, with both general‑audience and adult‑oriented works coexisting side by side while maintaining clear distinctions. Adult‑oriented doujinshi are handled under self‑imposed regulations such as labeling and age verification, yet their range extends from romantic themes to highly explicit sexual content.
In the corporate booth area, major anime and game companies showcase official merchandise and exhibits, their limited‑edition offerings stoking consumer desire.
The cosplay area is a place where sexual risks become apparent. People dressed as specific characters gather here for photo sessions and socializing, all governed by strict rules. However, attitudes that focus solely on revealing costumes or physical attributes, unauthorized photography, and excessive demands for poses are never entirely eliminated.
In every section of Comic Market, most attendees naturally accept sexual expression as part of freedom of expression, with both general‑audience and adult‑oriented works coexisting within the same space.
Comic Market’s organizing staff consists entirely of volunteer enthusiasts who receive no monetary compensation.
Even though staff members must cover their own transportation costs, they are provided with boxed lunches and tea, and can participate in post‑event gatherings. A diverse group of people takes part—students, office workers, Self‑Defense Force personnel, doctors, manga artists, anime industry professionals, and many others. Although this volunteer work is extremely demanding physically, nearly 3,000 dedicated individuals come together simply because they love Comic Market. Becoming a staff member requires selection and screening; candidates are encouraged to have participated in multiple Comic Markets. While there are no formal interviews or written exams like those at a company, applicants must attend informational sessions and preparatory meetings and demonstrate an ability to follow the rules. Despite being volunteers, not just anyone can join—only those who meet certain standards are chosen. Consequently, no matter how prominent or influential a guest may be, staff always treat them with respect. There exists an unwritten rule: always be kind and considerate toward the staff.
