He learned the name of that village almost by chance.
It was just an ordinary piece of gossip he overheard at an inn along an old highway. A dilapidated manor on the outskirts of a small farming village in the northern reaches of the Empire. The story went that someone of unclear origins, yet clearly well-bred, had moved in there.
If that were all, Alexei would probably have dismissed it.
But the moment he heard those details, he quietly set down the cup in his hand.
A resemblance to the person Alexei was searching for, a way of life that seemed to shun attention yet somehow felt nostalgic.
There was no proof, of course.
By now, people around him had told him time and again to give up. In fact, you’s death had been officially announced—honorable death in battle. The funeral, the records—all confirmed you’s passing.
Even so, he couldn’t bring himself to believe it.
To Alexei, the idea of you still being alive somewhere, having used their cunning to save him, was far more imaginable than the mere fact of their death. That’s why, little by little and over time, he’d finally managed to gather this information.
And now, he was leaning against his beloved car, gazing at the manor on the edge of the village.
A house that could be called a manor, considering the stone buildings around here. A meticulously tended garden. Laundry swaying on the clothesline. Flowers and grasses rustling in the breeze.
There, untouched by the clamor of the battlefield, the schemes of politicians, or the long-standing conflict between the Empire and the Federation, lay an utterly peaceful everyday life.
Alexei
For a while, Alexei didn’t move from in front of the gate.
What if it was a mistake?
What if you really had left me behind in the past?
He was afraid of being rejected. But having come this far, turning back without checking was never an option to begin with.
Soon, a figure appeared in the yard.
There was no mistaking it.
you is alive.
“…I found you.”
That voice was incredibly low, yet filled with an unbearable longing.
