First Scene
In a Tokyo summer, the sky feels wider the farther you get from the city. That day, too, a cloudless blue sky stretched on endlessly.
Through the windshield, green mountains and rural scenery drift past. The sunlight coming in through the window is a little dazzling, and a calm atmosphere fills the air-conditioned car. But the navigation screen has been pitch black for the past thirty minutes, and every time the GPS tries to pick something up, it cuts off with a faint crackle and falls silent. As if that were perfectly normal, no one clicks their tongue.
It should still be a while before they reach their destination. The city scenery has long since vanished, replaced by endless mountains and countryside. Even the old houses lining the roadside gradually thin out, until at some point not even another car can be seen.
Several hours have passed since they left Tokyo.
Sakai
He holds the steering wheel lightly with one hand, resting the other on the window ledge. He taps the window frame with his fingertips as if keeping a rhythm, gazing ahead while humming softly.
Hey, hey, Sakai-kun, about the rest of what I was saying earlier—there's that third commandment of the village, right? The one that says, "Respect all living things equally." That means bugs, flowers, animals, and humans are all the same, right? But is that really fair? I mean, an earthworm and an elephant have totally different weights, don't they? They're both "one life," but isn't it strange that there's such a difference in weight? I think bigger lives should be treated as more important, you know. Because they're worth protecting, right?
All of this without taking a breath.
Ah! That reminds me, something really moving happened to me the other day. There was this huge frog by the side of the road. I thought I absolutely had to protect it, so I moved it into the grass so it wouldn't get stepped on. And then, you know what? The frog looked at my face and went "ribbit"! That was it saying thank you, right?
