His real name is “Koki Nishine.”
The “kō” in his given name was broken down into “hamu,” and the “ki” was read as “teru.” At his debut, he was a third-year high school student preparing for the Common First Stage Exam (now the Common Test for University Admissions). While walking home with Akio Nikaido, he passed by the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at H University and was prophesied by Professor Shin Urushihara, who was dressed in a bizarre outfit, that “you will become a veterinarian someday,” after which he was handed a Siberian Husky puppy (named Chobi). Later, on the rather lukewarm grounds of wanting to save money on pet medical expenses, he applied to H University’s Science II program and successfully gained admission. In the second semester of his second year, he transferred to the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine as he had hoped and began pursuing his dream under the guidance of Professor Urushihara. He is sensible yet goes at his own pace, with a cool disposition and little emotional fluctuation; in the story, he is sometimes described as gloomy. Generally calm and level-headed, he also has a detached, unattached personality—so much so that when the research he had painstakingly worked on for half a year suddenly could no longer be presented at an academic conference, he showed no particular sign of distress. His personal motto is, “Even if it’s tight, I’ll never fail a crucial exam,” and thanks to his seriousness, quick-wittedness, and strong performance under pressure, he has never once failed a test. However, he doesn’t particularly enjoy studying; in fact, precisely because he dislikes it, he seems eager to finish it quickly. Among his classmates, professors, his mother, and even his pets, he is nicknamed “Hamuteru,” while only his father still calls him “Masaki.” Incidentally, his grandmother calls him “Kimitel.” His parents work in music-related fields—his mother is a vocalist and his father a pianist—and he can play the piano himself, though despite having some talent, he completely lacks musical ear, so he cannot detect obvious pitch errors even when playing a piano whose notes are wildly off-key—a fact that even an amateur would notice. (According to his grandmother, this is why she gave up trying to steer him toward a career in music.)
Mickey
A female calico cat kept at Hamuteru’s family home. Her official owner is his grandmother, but Hamuteru often takes care of her. She’s assertive and quick-tempered yet nurturing—a big sisterly figure who speaks in Kansai dialect, a typical Osaka woman. Cunning and good at fighting, she’s dependable and thus reigns as the matriarch over the neighborhood stray cats. Like any cat, she’s proud and capricious. She dislikes dogs, but when the puppy Chobi was brought in, she reluctantly looked after him and has maintained a good relationship with him even as he’s grown.
Hiyo-chan
Koki Nishine’s personality is so ferocious that he’s even called “the strongest creature in the Nishine family,” and he attacks anyone who enters the premises, regardless of whether they’re a member of the household. Countless humans have been defeated by his powerful kicks. Even Hamtel’s friend, Nikaido, bears a deep-seated trauma because of it.
After growing into a rooster, his crowing became so loud that his grandmother blasted music at full volume, which made him timid. However, after winning a fight against a neighborhood dog that wandered into the yard, he gained confidence—and Hamtel, deciding “it’s fine to just let Hiyo-chan be as he is,” gave up on training him. Thus, the current tyrannical Hiyo-chan came to be.
Koki Nishine
Koki Nishine’s grandmother. Koki Nishine calls her “Grandma.” In the original work, she always appears in a kimono.
Though refined, she has a fiery temper and is very assertive; despite holding grudges, she quickly forgets anything inconvenient. A headstrong, quick-tempered troublemaker—so much so that people say, “In the Nishine family, she is the judge and the law itself”—she remains an endearing, easygoing grandmother whom Koki Nishine usually manages to outmaneuver and can’t easily defy.
By virtue of her position, she even delegates the care of the animals she’s taken in—not just her pet Mickey—to Koki Nishine, maintaining a laid-back stance of merely voicing her opinions. Ha…
