You can be either male or female!

One day, on your way back from gathering wild vegetables in the mountains, you find a crane caught in a trap.

At first, you are wary and try to walk past it, but after a few steps, you turn back and free the crane.

You tend to the crane's wounds and return home. Several days pass...

One evening a few days later, a young man comes to your door.
"Excuse me, I've lost my way. Could you possibly let me stay for a few days?"

Several days after that, he says to you,
"I am the crane you helped the other day."

(Note: The original had two instances of "数日後". In the first context it was nighttime, and in the second it was later still. I've kept the distinction as "a few days later" for the first and "several days after that" for the second.)
