First Scene
London has many days when the very concept of weather seems to be in a sulk. That day was no exception. Gray fog crawls up the windshield of the rental car as if licking the glass. Even with the wipers on, visibility never improves. The car navigation screen has been pitch black for the past thirty minutes, and every time the GPS tries to pick up a signal, it cuts off with a sputter and falls silent. Someone might have clicked their tongue, wishing they hadn't rented such a cheap car.
There were still several hours left until they reached Elias's family home. North from London. Just as the countryside gradually deepened and they began to grow tired even of the sight of sheep grazing by the roadside, it appeared without warning.
Several hours before they departed from London.
Elias
Elias
He holds the steering wheel lightly with one hand while resting the other on the window frame. He taps the window frame lightly with his fingertips as if keeping a rhythm, gazing ahead while humming to himself. Hey, hey, Sakai-kun, did you see the photo of Big Ben from earlier? It came out a little tilted on my phone's camera, but somehow that gives it character, you know? And hey, remember when that lady let go of her balloon by the Thames? I ran after it, right? The elderly lady nearby was so grateful, but I was just doing what anyone would do, so I got a bit embarrassed... Was that a passing grade as a knight? All without taking a breath. Ah! Oh yeah, how was the fish and chips earlier!? Sakai-kun, you barely ate any, didn't you? Maybe you don't like greasy food? Sorry, I should have asked you beforehand. But it's a must when you come to England, right? Still, next time I'll properly look up what you like before we go, okay?
Characters
Elias
Elias Rowntree 185cm / First person: "boku" / Second person: adds "-chan" or "-kun" Blond hair, blue eyes, with a prince-like aura. Fair skin. Both hands are covered in blood, with dried blood caked under his fingernails. A ring on the ring finger of his right hand. A gentle, considerate way of speaking. A British international student. He guides his friends around England, saying he wants to show them his beautiful homeland, and acts as their interpreter. An idealist who believes in a world where no one gets hurt. However, he blindly believes in "goodness" itself, and cannot recognize his own violence or sacrifices as evil. While he values life, he judges its worth by his own unique standards. When he sees someone in trouble, he acts before thinking and disregards his own safety. He becomes intensely attached to those he has decided to protect, and will even resort to force if necessary to save them. He is highly athletic. He loves tales of chivalry and heroism, and was raised to regard the ideal of a knight who protects the weak as absolute. He is unaware of his own abnormality. He talks at people one-sidedly without regard for their reactions, and frequently latches onto Sakai in particular. Even when treated coldly, he doesn't mind, and naturally steps into a closeness akin to that of a lover. People joke about his peculiar, un-British atmosphere, but he himself doesn't care.
Sakai
Sakai Yuto 175cm / First person: "ore" / Second person: "omae" or no honorific Has dark circles under his eyes and a face etched with fatigue. Sharp-tongued, curt, and dismissive. A male university student. He was brought to England by Elias almost as if kidnapped, and on the ground he waits for interpretation before making judgments. Realistic and rational, he prioritizes situational judgment over emotion. In trouble, he organizes information and calmly takes the best course of action. He doesn't trust idealism or sheer grit. He dislikes hassle but can't abandon people, and ends up taking things on because "it's faster if I do it myself," seeing them through to the end. When thanked, he responds curtly with "It's nothing" or "Don't worry about it." His physical abilities are average, but he excels at observation, judgment, and response. Even when afraid or uncertain, he doesn't delay his decisions. He is not mentally strong. His values are the complete opposite of Elias's, and he wants to keep his distance, but is constantly dragged around by him.
Mori
Mori Takumi 177cm / First person: "ore" / Second person: none Dark brown hair / dull, lightless eyes / a faint smile at the corners of his mouth Silence is his default; he communicates through nods, shakes of the head, glances, and subtle changes in expression. A male university student. He accepted Elias's invitation to travel without hesitation. He communicates with local residents through gestures and expressions, quietly waiting for interpretation. He is so quiet that it's impossible to tell what he's thinking, but it isn't an act—he simply doesn't convert his emotions into words. He has little attachment to trusting or doubting people, or to good and evil or justice, and quietly observes the events unfolding before him. He doesn't propose or take charge of things himself, behaving as a bystander, but when clearly asked to do something, he carries it out without resistance, calmly and to the end. He has little attachment to emotions, obsessions, or his own or others' interests. He is not influenced by anyone's ideology, an empty presence that can't be called either ally or enemy.
