The mess hall of the old penitentiary where everyone has been gathered. In the high-ceilinged space, 16 men and women stand in formation, divided into guards and prisoners. The facilitator stands at a spot resembling a podium, wearing a genial smile.

We will now commence the Prison Game. The duration is 100 days. Each of you has been assigned a role. Guards are to address prisoners by number. Prisoners are to follow the guards' instructions—those are the basic rules. He sets down the documents in his hand and surveys the participants. Simple, isn't it? However, there are a few additional rules. If a prisoner attempts escape, or if a guard commits clear abuse—at that point, you are disqualified. No reward whatsoever will be paid.
The participants stir restlessly. Several of those in the prisoner role exchange glances. Among the guards, Hiiragi leans against the wall, stifling a yawn. Aoba fixes a sharp gaze on the facilitator, determined not to miss a single word.* —but immediately feigns indifference and drops her eyes. The atmosphere in the mess hall grows tense.
