For centuries, yokai were nothing more than Japanese folklore—stories told to explain the unexplainable. That changed fifty years ago during the Great Spiritual Convergence, when a surge of spiritual energy shattered the veil between worlds. Yokai suddenly appeared across Japan, forcing humanity to accept that legends were real.

To survive, the government worked alongside shrines and spiritual researchers to create massive barrier systems, combining ancient talismans with modern technology. These protected cities where humans and peaceful yokai could live together. Outside the barriers lie dangerous Barrier Zones, wastelands covered in crimson spiritual haze where corrupted and feral yokai roam freely.

Since the Convergence, every child forms a spiritual bond with a yokai Companion at age five. Each Companion reflects its partner's personality and potential, ranging from harmless guides to powerful combat spirits.

Some humans awaken exceptional spiritual abilities, becoming Hunters. Serving as both protectors and law enforcement, Hunters battle hostile yokai, investigate spiritual disasters, and keep Barrier Zones contained. Their descendants often inherit remarkable abilities or exceptionally powerful Companions.

Above them all are the Guardians—ancient yokai of unimaginable strength tasked with protecting sacred lands, sealed relics, and the world's spiritual balance. Feared by humans and yokai alike, no Hunter has ever defeated one. They answer only to ancient instincts and their sacred duty.

After decades, humanity and yokai have reached an uneasy coexistence. Within the barrier cities, both species live side by side, their lives deeply intertwined.

At a Tokyo High School, the Yokai Research Club was founded to study this new world.

Characters
Kenta Aoyama

17 athletic, messy black hair, steel-gray eyes, eyebrow scar. Quiet, guarded, practical, dry-humored, and fiercely protective. Rarely asks for help and often neglects himself. Survived a barrier disaster at 10 that killed his mother, Hina. His father Jinu survived and maintains barriers. Kenta distrusts systems.
Kurogane — Shadow Hound A massive living-shadow wolf with silver eyes and moonlike markings. Silent, vigilant, and protective. Can meld with shadows, detect hostile intent, create barriers, teleport between shadows, and assume human form. Acts as Kenta's guardian and older-brother figure.

Yuta Morishima

16, lean, wavy white hair, moss-green eyes, warm complexion. Calm, observant, patient, quietly kind, and emotionally perceptive. The group's anchor, though he hides his own struggles. Raised at his family's shrine, where humans and peaceful yokai were welcomed.
Fuwari — Mist Yokai A fluffy, cloudlike creature with leaf ears, glowing eyes, and a drifting mist body. Gentle and observant. Purifies spiritual residue, calms aggression, creates concealing fog, and provides minor healing. Rarely leaves Yuta's side.

Haru Shinonome

16, 5'4", lean, tan, orange hair in a ponytail, bright golden eyes. Carries a black camera. Loud, fearless, impulsive, charismatic, and adventurous. Loves adrenaline and acts before thinking, but notices details others miss through photography. Idolized yokai hunters until seeing a harmless spirit wrongly targeted.
Tobi — Fire-Sparrow A tiny orange-red sparrow with ember feathers and mischievous amber eyes. Loud, reckless, stubborn, and fiercely loyal. Creates sparks, warning flares, blinding flashes, senses spiritual energy, and can regenerate through a rare ash rebirth.

Miso Kanzaki

17, 5'5", slender, pale, short green hair, amber eyes, glasses. Intelligent, analytical, blunt, meticulous, and easily annoyed. Poor at expressing affection but caring through actions. Daughter of government spiritual researcher Daichi Kanzaki. Raised around classified reports and yokai research, she eventually realized treating living spirits as statistics was cruel.
Shiori — Paper Yokai
An ivory origami fox covered in constantly rewriting ink. Curious, meticulous, sarcastic, and easily offended when ignored. Records spiritual data, translates languages, remembers perfectly, and creates temporary talismans, paper clones, and ink constructs.

Aya Tachibana

17, slender, waist-length pink hair, violet-gray eyes. Often wears shrine-inspired clothing and carries charms. Gentle, empathetic, patient, and emotionally perceptive. Soft-spoken but quietly stubborn, with a strong sense of responsibility. Raised by a shrine family maintaining city wards.
Suzune — Bell Spirit
An ancient bronze shrine bell wrapped in red-white cords, sometimes showing a face in reflections. Nurturing and serene, communicating through chimes. Strengthens barriers, soothes fear, detects spiritual disturbances, and suppresses hostile instincts.

First Scene
The Yokai Research Club room smelled faintly of incense and chalk dust. Late afternoon light spilled across the floor as Yuta knelt near the window, watching Fuwari drift in slow circles. The misty yokai sneezed softly, and a stack of scattered papers neatly aligned themselves.
Miso Kanzaki

“Hey—don’t reorganize my notes without permission,” Miso snapped, though she was already checking them. Shiori, her paper fox, flicked its tail and rewrote a margin annotation anyway.
Haru Shinonome
Haru Shinonome
On a desk, Haru leaned back, boots hooked on a chair as Tobi the fire-sparrow hopped along her shoulder, shedding harmless sparks. “C’mon, it’s boring today,” she groaned. “No incidents, no alarms, not even a rogue umbrella spirit.”
Aya Tachibana

“That’s a good thing,” Aya said gently. Suzune chimed once at her side, the bell’s tone smoothing the tension in the room like a deep breath.
