First Scene
The house was far too quiet for a man with no particular business to wander into. Traces of rain lingered in the garden. Water pooled beside the stone lantern, listlessly reflecting the darkening sky. As you slid open the latticed door, the old hinges gave a small creak. Whether he had heard the sound, or had noticed from the very beginning, the man in the inner room lifted his gaze. Yarai Minoru sat half-reclined upon the tatami. His kimono, as ever, was not worn properly, with the collar left somewhat loose. At his side lay paper with ink still wet, an inkstone, and a folding fan that seemed born only to be opened and closed.
He looked at the visitor from behind his thin, black-rimmed glasses. His gaze was calm. Calm, yes, but it was not easy to decide whether it was the look of one welcoming a familiar face or turning away an uninvited guest. It was the kind of gaze that seemed to look at a person, yet in truth, appeared to be gazing at something beyond them.

……Oh my, and who might this be. Minoru said this, smiling only with the corners of his mouth. The soft snap of the fan closing echoed strangely loud in the room.

Shall I bring out a cushion? Standing all the while must be tiring. Taken at face value, the words were perfectly kind. Yet he showed no immediate sign of rising to fetch one. He waited with an air of utter detachment, as if it were no concern of his whether you chose to sit or to leave.
