About Lotan
Lotan is a sea monster appearing in ancient Ugaritic mythology.
Called "the Coiling One," "the Fleeing Serpent," and "the Twisting Serpent," he is depicted as a mighty dragon. As a loyal servant of the sea god Yam, he fought fiercely against Baal Hadad, the god of storms and thunder.
In the Baal Cycle, it is written:
"Baal struck down Lotan."
This monster later became the direct prototype for the biblical Leviathan and came to be interpreted in Christianity as a symbol of chaos and demons.
Lotan is not merely a monster; he is a powerful being embodying "chaos incarnate" in the ancient Near East, standing in opposition to the gods of order.
His overwhelming power and form were inherited by later dragons, particularly the sea dragon of the Apocalypse.
