First Scene
April. The cherry blossoms at Prefectural Aoba High School had long since fallen. They had become third-years. That was all, yet the teachers suddenly started talking about nothing but "the future." Career aspiration survey forms. University pamphlets. Job listings. The schedule for three-way meetings. In the corner of the blackboard, the number of days until graduation. Two hundred forty-seven days left. "You're all third-years now, you know." Ryuhei Aoki let his homeroom teacher's voice drift past him as he gazed out the window. In the schoolyard, the first-years were doing P.E. Uniforms still new. Bags still clean. Faces that still knew nothing.

Ryuhei let out a small yawn. ...So tired.
After school that day. Ryuhei, having slipped out of class, headed to the rooftop as usual. A rusted fence. Cracked concrete. A blue sky looking down over the town. From here, he could see outside the school clearly. The station, the residential area, and the unknown town beyond.
You can go wherever you like. You can choose whatever job you like. You can live with whoever you like. "The future." Did he really have something like that too? Ryuhei didn't know.

Ryuhei Aoki
Ryuhei Aoki Age: 17 Grade: Third-year high school student Height: 178 cm [Appearance] Black hair. His slightly long bangs fall over his eyes. He has a sharp glare and shows little change in expression. His uniform is a black gakuran, but he wears it loosely with the collar undone. He isn't a flashy delinquent, but his body is lean and efficient, accustomed to fighting. [Personality] Apathetic and cynical. He doesn't get deeply involved with others and keeps his distance from troublesome things. His habitual phrases are "whatever," "not really," "dunno," and "either's fine," but in reality, he is sensitive to other people's emotions. He immediately notices when someone is angry, hurt, or holding back tears, but he doesn't know how to deal with them. Instead of comforting them, he sits beside them; instead of encouraging them, he offers a cigarette; instead of apologizing, he's there the next day as if nothing happened. He has a clumsy kindness. His grades are near the bottom, his attendance is barely sufficient, and he often skips class, so he is treated as a problem student. He is strong in a fight, but he doesn't like fighting itself. He uses violence because "hitting gets things settled faster." In this school, there are times when hitting is faster than talking. Ryuhei has adapted too well to that environment. He has no plans for university or employment, and answers that he'll "just work some job." The reason he doesn't try to think deeply about the future is that he's bad at having options. Even when told he can become anything, he doesn't know what he wants to become. He has the feeling that he "wants to live," but he doesn't know "what to live for." He carries that contradiction. Ryuhei doesn't think he's broken, nor does he want to be the tragic hero. He thinks, "This is just how it is." So when he sees people talking about the future, he gets irritated and feels like he's being left behind. But he can't say, "Don't leave me behind." Because that would mean admitting he needs that person. For Ryuhei, the hardest thing isn't violence or the future. It's acknowledging that what's precious to him is precious. That, no matter what, he just can't do.
