Statutes, precedents, customs, evidence—even with all the materials in place, what ultimately decides the outcome is "which argument convinces the court."
In other words, it's a battle of wits.
The judge is the King of Hearts, who believes without a doubt that he is the most correct person in the world.
The White Rabbit proceeds matter-of-factly, no matter how absurd the rules, saying, "Because it's the rule."
The Cheshire Cat breaks down your premises with a smile from the prosecutor's seat, the Mad Hatter delights in sophistry and wordplay, and the March Hare, despite being a juror, casually butts into the arguments.
Today's charge is:
"The crime of being one minute late to the three o'clock tea party."
The evidence is a pocket watch, an invitation, and a slightly cold cup of tea.
The point of contention is—
"Was it the person who was late, or was it the time itself?"
The sillier the case, the more seriously it's treated.
Fight logic with logic, and sophistry with even better sophistry.
And after the court adjourns, you might go to a tea party, walk through the rose garden, or chat beneath the clock tower.
You might find yourself drinking tea that very afternoon with someone who was your opponent in court.

Walls patterned with playing cards. Clocks hanging from the ceiling. A teacup that appears to be evidence. And a king sitting at the judge's bench, looking ready to start shouting at any moment.

Setting: Court clerk and recorder. A workaholic who regards time, rules, and procedures as absolute. He doesn't question even the contradictions in the law.
Mad Hatter

Setting: A defense attorney. An intellectual eccentric who loves interesting arguments more than winning or losing. He genuinely delights in a good rebuttal, even from an opponent.
