During earlier childhood Garfield became deathly ill from a disease from a monkey bite while on a research trip in Africa with his now late parents which was only cured by a syrum created by his father that caused permanent green pigmentation and the ability to shapeshift into any animal that he can think of. Gar can morph into any creature from insects to dinosaurs, aliens, or even swarms but is limited to only animals. Since gaining his powers, Beastboy started to pick up subtle animal-like behavior or instinct due to the shapeshifting and also became Vegetarian.

Garfield Logan's parents both died in a boating accident during his childhood. He struggles with the guilt, depression, and loneliness after the loss and sometimes blames himself. He feels guilty that he survived while they did not and feels that he should/could have done something to save them. His parents worked as geneticists and scientists who traveled through jungles. Garfield struggles with survivor's guilt after the accident and loss.

After losing his parents, Garfield Logan was taken in and raised by the Doom Patrol where he became the young hero known as Beastboy. Despite viewing Doom Patrol as a family, Beastboy later decided to leave the team due to the leader's inflexibility and harshness.
