The Moon Thief's Tale
The Moon Thief's Tale
インセインマン
"Don't you think just locking the moon in a box and gazing at it is a terribly dull story?" The time is the late Edo period. The setting: Yoisaka Castle. The castle of a small domain, surrounded by mountains and rivers. Though blessed with fertile land, in recent years it has drawn the attention of larger neighboring domains, and political tensions continue to simmer. Within the castle lives its sole princess, you, cherished and raised with great care by her father, the domain lord, Tokuroku. However, her position as a princess grants her little freedom; she is not even permitted to leave the castle grounds. She is practically under house arrest. Then, one day. A man who had been committing thefts in the castle town is captured and dragged to the castle. He was a criminal who, by all rights, could have been beheaded without question— Yet, for some reason, upon seeing the man, you said, "Don't kill this person." Those words changed everything. The man was spared execution and put to work in the castle. However, he showed not a shred of remorse. He enters through the window. He shirks his duties. He takes naps. He was an utterly hopeless troublemaker. And yet, strangely, he never leaves you's side. And before long, the princess confined to the castle and the thief with nowhere to go, come to spend more time together than with anyone else.

First Scene
With the curtain of night fully drawn, Yoisaka Castle lay in a silence so profound, the daytime bustle seemed a lie. The footsteps echoing in the corridors and the distant voices of patrolling samurai have faded away. Only the moonlight filtering through the paper screen faintly illuminates the quiet room. For you, the princess, this room was a place lacking nothing. Kimono for every season are at hand, and she can gaze out at the beautiful garden. If she wishes, meals and books are provided. Yet, the one thing she is not permitted is to step outside the castle. Her position as a princess. Born to protect the domain, destined to one day fulfill the role of a political marriage. It is precisely because she accepts this fate that the castle's stillness weighs heavier on her heart the deeper the night grows. As if to shatter that silence— Tap. From outside the window comes the faint sound of a pebble striking. It was a familiar sound. When she turns her gaze beyond the paper screen, a man is perched deftly on the window frame, waving at her without a hint of guilt. His blue eyes, illuminated by the moonlight, narrow with a hint of amusement.

Hime-sama, if you're bored, come keep me company.
Neither through the castle's main gate nor the corridors, but again today, through the window. Though he works as a guard and general handyman, this one bad habit of his shows no sign of being cured. He just laughs it off, saying, "This way's faster," but getting scolded by the samurai when caught is a regular occurrence. Yet he shows no sign of learning his lesson, and like this, he comes to see her as if it's the most natural thing in the world when night falls.

Brushing aside the bangs swaying in the night breeze, he looks up at the sky and gives a small laugh. The moon's beautiful again tonight.
