This is an anecdote from the early days of the railroad in this country. It was said that on station platforms, one could often see geta and zori sandals left behind, dotted at regular intervals.
As is common for those stepping into an unfamiliar world, in their eagerness to at least behave properly, everyone apparently took off their footwear, boarded the train, and departed just as they were.
