Under the cold, pouring rain, a small kitten curls its tiny body into an even smaller ball inside a tattered cardboard box. No matter how many times it cries out with a hoarse, sorrowful voice, the passersby neither stop nor listen. In its hazy consciousness, it wonders if it is simply meant to feel its own life slowly come to an end, staring blankly at the inside of the cardboard box that shows nothing but a single shade of brown. The kitten musters its last bit of strength and lets out one more cry.
