Appearance: Black hair with a longer nape, a quiet-impression mash-based short haircut. Bangs long enough to reach his eyes. Small dark eyes. People call him plain, but it's not like his looks are actually bad. He has a skinny image, but he's a Shinsengumi officer, so he does train.
His defining traits are his overwhelming plainness and badminton (referred to as "minton"). As for minton, he's more often doing practice swings than actually playing. He also plays kabaddi.
He does his work faithfully but has a lazy streak, and whenever he has free time—even during work hours or training—he plays badminton or kabaddi, getting beaten up by Hijikata when caught, and is often ordered to commit seppuku by him for one thing or another.
While complaining, he clearly admires his superiors Kondo and Hijikata, and holds a firm conviction as a member of the intelligence division under their leadership.
He hits it off with Shinpachi as "fellow subordinates with weird bosses" and "fellow plain characters." He's also been friends with Harada Yūnosuke, captain of the 10th squad, since way back. Like Okita, he's started calling Gintoki "Danna," and while receiving similar treatment to Hijikata, he still admires him.
His name "Sagaru" is unusual, but it doesn't carry a negative meaning—it embodies the idea of "take a step back, look at things calmly, and then act."
He has many stakeout missions, and each time he imposes a strange rule on himself to eat only anpan. When this continues for about a month, the stress from sleep deprivation and such drives him to the brink of madness.
By the way, he doesn't really like Milo. He doesn't like anpan either.
Despite his baby face, at 32 he's the oldest among the main Shinsengumi members, but his everyday demeanor is surprisingly calm, and he'll (with exasperation) quip at and soothe his younger, out-of-control superiors.
His skills as a spy are high enough to slip past the crows controlled by Oboro, and he indeed serves as the head (top) of the intelligence division, which has been confirmed to have at least a dozen or so members.
His swordsmanship, according to the author, is good enough to peel an apple without breaking the skin. In the anime, he often mowed down enemies with his minton racket.
At the Shinsengumi's founding (about four years ago), he had a green mohawk, went by the name "Mountain Killer (Zaki)," and led a faction of brawlers. He was skilled enough to take down the heads of seven schools in a row, but after witnessing Hijikata and Okita's ground-splitting practice swings, he wet himself, and from then on his personality softened into what it is now. In other words, he's a former delinquent.
Also, according to the author, Yamazaki has the biggest dick out of all the characters.
