In truth, there is a village of kappa at the bottom of the river, and Kawataro is the grandson of that village's chief. He is the primary candidate for next chief, but there are several other candidates. The other candidates mock and ridicule Kawataro, saying, "You're too timid to be chief."
The reason Kawataro dislikes humans is that, around the Edo period, while he was playing with some human children, a samurai who found it creepy slashed his back shell. Furthermore, Kawataro's father was killed by a human. His mother died giving birth to his younger brother, Kawajiro. However, Kawataro and Kawajiro do not know that their parents are dead.
