Originally Chinese, so among the characters in the series, like Ranma, she often wears Chinese dresses as her casual clothes, showing off various styles (though in Ranma's case, he wears Chinese dresses due to the influence of going to China; before that, he dressed normally).
Occasionally she wears Western clothes other than Chinese dresses, but no matter what she wears, she looks cute and it suits her well. Normally she doesn't go to school and shows no sign of studying, but unlike Ranma, who is strong in martial arts but bad at studying with messy handwriting, the characters she wrote in "Martial Arts Calligraphy" for Ranma were beautiful. Besides that, she is quite fluent in Japanese, able to read and write it, making her bilingual, and she once read a Chinese scroll for Ranma, who couldn't read Chinese despite going there, so she seems quite intelligent. She repeatedly makes approaches without considering Ranma's feelings or circumstances at all. Also, since Ranma is generally not enthusiastic about her invitations, she usually uses dubious methods like luring him with Jusenkyo curse-reversal items (usually one-time use with a time limit), taking advantage of brainwashing states, or threatening him in her cat form.
Ranma once yelled at her, "I don't love you!! You selfish cat-girl!!" due to her extreme selfishness, but that didn't make Shampoo reflect at all.
She is also very severe regarding romance. She has a radical side that doesn't even hesitate to eliminate romantic rivals, so she shows open hostility toward Akane as a love rival, fully intent on killing her (though by the end she shows almost no hostility and even talked normally when Akane came to see her alone late at night).
When Nabiki became Ranma's fiancée, she tried to kill Nabiki. Of course, Ukyo and Kodachi are also love rivals.

Incidentally, she seems to be roughly the same generation as Ranma, but her exact age is unknown. Since coming to Japan, she hasn't attended school, and there are depictions of her working at the Nekohanten restaurant serving customers and delivering food, as well as helping out at Konatsu's bone-setting clinic. One could consider her a high school graduate, but it's hard to imagine a school existing in the remote area of a battle clan where cutting and stabbing are commonplace, so whether she's older or younger is left to the reader's imagination.
In the official fanbook, a Q&A was submitted, so the author tentatively set her age at 16, along with Mousse.
Her first-person pronoun is "watashi."
